13-year-old drowns while swimming at Lynn Woods reservoir
A 13-year-old Lynn boy drowned Sunday afternoon while swimming with friends at a local reservoir, according to authorities.
A 911 call reporting a swimmer in distress at Walden Pond, the Lynn Woods reservoir not to be confused with Walden Pond in Concord, came shortly before 2 p.m., Saugus Police Chief Domenic DiMella said Sunday.
According to Carrie Kimball-Monahan, a spokeswoman for the Essex District Attorney’s office, the boy had been in the water with a group of friends and was having difficulty swimming.
Saugus police arrived “within minutes” to begin searching the pond and surrounding areas, according to DiMella. They were joined shortly thereafter by Saugus fire, Lynn police and fire, a state police helicopter team, and a Cambridge police dive team.
At approximately 2:33 p.m., Saugus Fire Department members found the boy in the water and began efforts to resuscitate him, DiMella said.
The boy was then taken to Lynn Union Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, according to the DA’s office.
State police detectives are investigating the circumstances surrounding the drowning. No foul play is suspected, officials said.
According to the city of Lynn’s website, swimming is prohibited within Lynn Woods reservoirs, as they are used for the city’s drinking water. Walden Pond is the largest of three reservoirs in the reservation, which is the second largest municipal park in the country.
