Death of infant at Lynn shelter under investigation

Charles Brand III with parents Laci Brand and Charles Brand. Roshelle Henson

The death of a 4-month-old boy at a Lynn shelter in September is being investigated as a possible child endangerment case, The Boston Globe reports.

Court documents obtained by the paper show that employees at the shelter made several reports to the state Department of Children and Families about the welfare of the boy, Charles D. Brand III, before he was found unresponsive at the Independence House. DCF is reviewing the case and results of the child’s autopsy are pending.

Shelter workers who spoke with state police investigators said the baby’s mother, Laci Brand, “would often times leave [b]aby Charles unattended for long periods” and believed the authorities would take custody of the child.

Brand denied those accusations and told the Globe the shelter staff’s concerns  were “unjustified.”
