William M. Averill, 50, of West Roxbury, was killed when the car he was driving on Route 28 in Randolph “left the roadway, traveled onto the sidewalk, and struck a bridge abutment,” according to Massachusetts State Police.

He was the only person in the car.

Averill was scheduled for arraignment in Suffolk Superior Court on charges that he raped a woman he was assigned to supervise earlier this year. Prosecutors say the assault, which happened on Jan. 5, took place when the woman reported to Averill’s office, according to the Associated Press. She was serving a one-year probation sentence.

Averill faced three counts each of rape and indecent assault and battery and one count of assault with intent to rape.

He has been on administrative leave during the investigation.
