Roslindale kids thank first responders after playground arson

The kids at Sumner Elementary School in Roslindale may no longer have a playground, but they showed a lot of heart on Tuesday.

Weeks after their playground was burned down by arsonists, the kids invited Police Commissioner William Evans and Fire Chief Joe Finn to the school to thank them for their service. They gave firefighters cards and drawings to show their appreciation.

Boston firefighters knocked down the playground blaze on May 23 and police charged three juveniles with arson in connection with the incident last week.

Said Evans to the kids, “I’m sorry about the damage done to your playground. It’s sad that it happened but the good news is that people in this community care so much about you guys that we’re going to build you a playground that’s bigger and better than the last one.”

The fire caused more than $10,000 in damage, police said. Members of the public and local businesses have raised more than $60,000 in donations to rebuild the playground, according to Boston Public Schools.
