Police investigating two assaults, one fatal, at Belle Isle Marsh

State police are investigating two assaults, one that caused fatal injuries to an elderly man, at the Belle Isle Marsh Reservation on the Revere-East Boston line.

Police said the first assault, which took place on May 29, resulted in the death of Daniel Pepe, of East Boston.

The 83-year-old suffered serious injuries while walking in the reservation. He was transported to Massachusetts General Hospital and died June 1, police said. His injuries prevented him from describing what had happened to him, according to police.

A second assault against a 67-year-old Lynn man took place on the afternoon of June 1, police said. The man, who was also walking in the reservation, suffered non-life threatening injuries.

Police said they are investigating whether the two assaults are related.

The suspect in the second assault is described as a white man in his late 20s or 30s, approximately 5-foot-9, and wearing a brown hat, T-shirt, and shorts.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call State Trooper Joel Balducci at 617-727-8817, extension 5670.
