Massachusetts State Police say they believe the body of the kayaker who went missing Friday on Silver Lake in Halifax has been found.

Following a weekend-long search, a coalition of local and state first reponders recovered a man’s body in the lake early Sunday afternoon.

While a formal identification has yet to have been made, “based on the circumstances,” police said they believe it is the body of the mid-20s-year-old man who fell into the lake Friday while fishing with a friend.

It remains unclear how or why the man fell into the lake, though officials told The Boston Globe on Saturday it was “highly unlikely” he was wearing any form of flotation device. The man’s friend, who wished to remain anonymous, told Fox 25 that he was fishing in his canoe when his friend’s kayak tipped and he began yelling for help, before disappearing into the lake.

According to officials, two state police divers made the recovery Sunday after after Massachusetts Environmental Police detected the body with sonar. The team, which also included local police, firefighters and the Plymouth County Technical Rescue Team, previously had difficulty locating the body due to Silver Lake’s silty clay bottom and the depth of the water.
