The search for the moose spotted Wednesday running through the streets of Belmont and Watertown has been called off.

The moose, identified as a young female, was last seen around 10 a.m. Thursday at the Belmont Audubon Sanctuary, Environmental police spokeswoman Katie Gronendyke said.

Environmental police and MassWildlife searched the area for several hours and a state police helicopter tried to locate the moose using thermal imaging, but both efforts were unsuccessful, she said.

Gronendyke said police are no longer searching for the jaunting moose, but are ready to respond if it is sighted again.
