The McDonald’s vs. Sav-Mor billboard battle is heating up

The war of words kicked up a notch on Saturday.

The Somerville sign duel between Sav-Mor Liquors and McDonald’s is raging on with another bout of warring words.

The feud between the McGrath Highway neighbors began earlier this month after Sav-Mor, known for its humorous billboard messages, aimed a joke at the McDonald’s across the street about an egg muffin deal, challenging the burger shop to make the next move.

McDonald’s responded with a warning Friday that the liquor store hadn’t “seen McMuffin yet.” But Sav-Mor welcomed its adversary, responding with a two-punch dig of its own.

The fast food chain made good on its warning with a no-nonsense message early Saturday.

McDonald’s spokeswoman Lindsay Wallin told the Globe it was a “no-brainer” for the company to respond to the Somerville store after seeing the media coverage of the back-and-forth.

“We have done similar [things] in another location on Route 1 in Saugus,” she said. “I’ve always admired Sav-Mor’s creative messages and we are happy to be included!”

Who will have the final word in the clash remains to be seen.
