Victim of car break-in chases suspect into Cumberland Farms, say police
A suspect in a car break-in was arrested Thursday after police say the victim chased after him into a convenience store and punched him.
Worcester police said officers responded to a report of a fight at the Cumberland Farms around 11:45 p.m. Thursday evening where they met the 44-year-old male victim. He told police he lived nearby and was returning home when he saw a car blocking his driveway. After trying to locate the owner of the car preventing him from parking, he returned to find two men near his vehicle.
The victim told police when he asked if they owned the car blocking him, the men replied “it won’t happen again,” while walking away.
When the victim entered his car, he saw it had been ransacked and immediately suspected the departing strangers, police said.
He gave chase, following one of the men into the Cumberland Farms, according to police, where he asked him to return his wallet.
Police said the suspect denied having the wallet, but it was recovered along with other possessions belonging to the victim in the market’s bathroom toilet. Officers were told by the store clerk that the suspect was the only person in the store at the time.
Davon Smith, 18, of Worcester was charged with breaking and entering into a motor vehicle in the nighttime with the intent to commit a felony, according to police.
The victim will also be summonsed to court for assault and battery for punching Smith in the face during the argument at the store, police said.
