Animal rescue crews worked from morning to night Wednesday to save an entangled humpback whale off the coast of Gloucester, according to a Facebook post from the Center for Coastal Studies.
As of around 8:45 p.m., the center’s marine animal entanglement response team and the Massachusetts Environmental Police had freed the whale, which was entangled in fishing line.

The center was notified about the whale around 8:30 a.m. and quickly sent a crew from its Provincetown base, according to Fox 25. The team used buoys to keep track of the whale as they cut off the fishing gear.
“We are so very grateful to the crew of the fishing vessel who reported the entanglement to authorities early this morning then stood by until help arrived,” a Facebook post from the center read. “Thanks to them, this whale has a chance.”
