Hilltop Steak House site was sold, but nobody will say who bought it
The giant cactus overlooking Route 1 in Saugus will soon have a new owner, but the company’s identity remains a mystery.
An official with High Country Investors, the parent company of the landmark Hilltop Steak House, told the Board of Selectmen last week that they had entered a purchase and sale agreement for the property and its liquor license, according to the Saugus Advertiser.
But High Country Investors CFO Dennis January declined to identify the new purchaser, citing a confidentiality agreement. He said the buyer was a publicly traded company and that their name would be released in the next several weeks, the Saugus Advertiser reports.
“They asked that we not disclose their names until they present themselves directly to town officials,” January said at the meeting. “As part of the purchase and sale agreement, we’ve also agreed to transfer any licenses we have at that time.”
Hilltop Steak House closed in 2013, and the building was demolished last year. The recognizable plastic cows dotting the property were also relocated. All that remains of the distinctive location is the 68-foot tall cactus bearing the name of original owner Frank Giuffrida.
Tuckaway Tavern and Butchery, a restaurant in New Hampshire, has been openly eyeing the Hilltop location and hinted last week about a possible move to Route 1.
