Bear cubs rescued after mother is electrocuted by wire
A mother bear and her two cubs had been seen wandering the streets of Gardner over the past week. But the sightings came to a sad halt Monday morning, according to Gardner police.
That’s when police received a call about two stranded bear cubs.
State environmental police, the Division of Fisheries & Wildlife, and Gardner police and fire responded to the area of Betty Spring Road and discovered the mother bear had died after being electrocuted by a nearby high voltage wire. Her cubs remained in a tree adjacent to the wire, police said.
After National Grid was contacted, responders were able to rescue the cubs from the tree. The cubs were evaluated as “in good health” by MassWildlife, according to police.
Police said the bears were drawn to the highly developed area due to large amounts of corn and sunflower seeds on the ground.
