A Tyngsborough private school cancels classes after a series of racist messages
A private Catholic school in Tyngsborough has canceled classes Tuesday “out of an abundance of caution” as police investigate a series of racist written messages and social media postings, according to Tyngsborough police.
At least one of the written messages at the Academy of Notre Dame appeared to target minority students at both the academy’s Lower Pre K-8 and Upper 9-12 schools, police said.
According to police, nonspecific threats were made against black students in a typed message found in a bathroom at the Lower School. Police said the note also referenced something occurring on May 17, 2016.
“We do not believe there is a credible threat against the school, but we are conducting an active and ongoing investigation at this time,” Police Chief Richard Howe said in a statement.
Other offensive messages in regards to the Upper School have been posted to Instagram and Twitter over the past several months. Police said they’ve been actively investigating the social media postings since February.
