6-year-old boy honored after making a 911 call that helped save his mother’s life

A young boy who helped save his mother’s life by calling 911 during a medical emergency was honored with the Lifesaver Award from Rhode Island State Police on Thursday.

Around 2:30 p.m. on April 22, emergency dispatchers received a call from Michael Finch, a 6-year-old from Tiverton, who said his mother was on the ground and unable to speak on the phone. Michael was able to verify his address and phone number to emergency dispatchers. He also warned them about the family’s dog, and had the door open for their arrival.

“Don’t mind our dog, she barks at every single person who comes here,” he told dispatchers. “So don’t mind her barking at you guys, OK?

When firefighters arrived, they found Michael’s mother, Rebecca Cottle, semi-conscious and on the ground, experiencing chest pains and having trouble breathing, police said. Michael showed responders where his mother’s medication was, and held the door for them as they moved his mother from the home.

When a firefighter thanked Michael for his help, police say he responded, “I did what my mom taught me to do.”

Michael’s mother fully recovered from the incident, police said. In addition to receiving the Lifesaver Award, police also named him an honorary trooper.
