Inert rifle grenade discovered at Chatham construction site
Chatham Police Sgt. William Glover has been on the job for 35 years and, for him, this was a first.

The rifle grenade after it was cleaned up.
An employee at Eastward Companies called the police department after making an unusual discovery at a construction site on Queen Anne Road just after 8 a.m. on Wednesday morning.
“We quickly identified it as a practice rifle grenade, which was inert,” said Glover.
Glover said he does not know where the item came from.
“I’m sure someone buried it there,” said Glover. “I’m not sure how deep it was buried, because of the embankment. It kind of blended into the surrounding embankment.”
Glover said officers closed the area off and immediately called the state’s bomb squad, who arrived and placed it in their truck for disposal.
Police praised Eastward Companies workers for not handling or moving the item and for calling police right away.
