School forbids teen from bringing older woman to prom

A high school senior’s request to bring his 22-year-old girlfriend to the prom was denied by Manchester, N.H. school officials in a 9-3 vote, reports the Union Leader.

The school district says she is over the age limit to attend the prom, which is being held Friday night.

Sultan Akhter, 18, and Kaitlyn Orzechowski , 22, have been dating for 8 months. The two met at Kmart, where they both work. Orzechowski is a senior at St. Anselm College.

Akhter’s mother, Roxanne Akhter, pleaded her son’s case to members of the school board during a 4-hour meeting on Monday night.

“I don’t understand why this is such a big issue,” said Roxanne Akhter. “I called numerous people and heard nothing. I found out the rule isn’t even on the books. I don’t understand.”

School spokesman Andrea Alley said an under 21 age limit is printed on the prom tickets.
