Surgeons remove 27 bags of heroin from Lynn man’s body
Surgeons at North Shore Medical Center removed 27 bags of heroin from the stomach and intestines of a Lynn man after he arrived at the hospital exhibiting symptoms of an overdose, The Boston Globe reported.
Miguel Rodriguez, 51, who had just returned from the Dominican Republic, faces drug trafficking charges after allegedly eating more than $16,000 worth of heroin, according to the Globe. The bags contained just over 163 grams of the drug, police told the Globe.
Police believe that one of the bags in Rodriguez’s stomach broke, causing him to overdose. When he arrived at the hospital, staff found foreign objects in his stomach and called police to the scene, who watched as surgeons removed the bags, the Globe reported. Rodriguez was treated with Narcan to reverse the overdose prior to undergoing surgery.
Rodriguez is the 29th person to overdose in Salem so far this year, police told the Globe. Three died in 2015 following overdoses.
