More than 1,000 officers honor fallen Mass. State trooper at wake

More than 1,000 law enforcement officials lined a main thoroughfare in Hudson Monday to pay their respects to fallen Massachusetts State Police Trooper Thomas Clardy, who was killed last week while on patrol.
The wake began at 2 p.m., drawing thousands of mourners to St. Michael’s Parish. Officers came from across the country, including some from Minnesota and Illinois, to attend Clardy’s wake along with law enforcement personnel from New England, according to State Police.
Clardy, 44, was killed last Wednesday when a Nissan traveled across three lanes on the Mass. Pike and hit his cruiser, which was pulled over in the breakdown lane as he conducted a traffic stop. The car’s driver, David Njuguna, 30, of Webster, was seriously injured in the crash and charged with negligent operation of a motor vehicle and failure to stay within marked lines, authorities said.
The trooper leaves behind his wife and six children, aged 4 to 17. A Marine Corps veteran, Clardy joined the police force in 2005 and built a reputation for himself as a hard worker, State Police Col. Richard McKeon said in a press conference last week.
“He was known for his professionalism and dedication,’’ McKeon said. “All who knew him have, today, borne witness to his outstanding character.’’
Clardy’s funeral will be held at St. Michael’s Tuesday at 11 a.m. He will be buried in the church’s cemetery.
