MIT fossil fuel protesters taking part in sit-in will not let up
They call themselves Fossil Free MIT and they show no signs of giving up.
For the past 116 days, students, professors, and alumni at MIT have been protesting fossil fuels by taking part in a sit-in, reports The Boston Globe.
The group is a constant presence in the hallway outside the offices of MIT president L. Rafael Reif. They are asking the school to divest its endowment from coal and tar sands and make the campus carbon neutral by 2040, as well as create an ethics advisory council to tackle “disinformation’’ about climate change, according to the Globe.
Many of the students work in labs that research renewable energy or climate change. Protester John D. Sterman, an MIT business professor, told the Globe it’s great to see the students become politically active.
Organizers believe this divestment sit-in at a college is record breaking, beating the 32-day record previously held by Swarthmore College.
“When we do something at MIT, we do it thoroughly,’’ Nina Lytton, a 1984 graduate of the MIT Sloan School of Management, told the Globe.
