Man shot by police in Dartmouth while allegedly charging at officers with knife

An officer first attempted to use a Taser to subdue the man, authorities said.

A 23-year-old man was shot by police in Dartmouth on Sunday afternoon while he was allegedly charging at officers with a knife.

Ryan Kuphal was in serious but stable condition at Rhode Island Hospital in Providence on Sunday night, according to a release from the Bristol County District Attorney’s office.

At about 4 p.m., Dartmouth police responded to a report of a domestic violence incident on Dartmouth Street between a mother and her son, later identified as Kuphal, authorities said. Kuphal had left the scene in his mother’s vehicle prior to officers’ arrival and was located a short time later outside a home on nearby Bush Street, according to authorities.

According to a preliminary investigation, Kuphal allegedly charged at the responding officers with a knife. An officer first deployed a non-lethal Taser, and then, as Kuphal continued to charge, an officer fired his service weapon and struck Kuphal one time, according to the DA’s office.

State police assigned to the DA’s office are investigating the incident.
