Fire destroys Newport mansion
A blaze that broke out Thursday has decimated a large home along Newport, Rhode Island’s prominent street of mansions.
Firefighters responded to the scene at 479 Bellevue Ave., where the house sits among famed mansions that have become popular tourism destinations. The cause of the fire was not immediately known, and no injuries were reported.
The home once belonged to the late John Drexel III, a Philadelphia-based banker and socialite whose great-great-grandfather founded Drexel University.
