Suffolk University board defends against school president’s accusations

The chairman of Suffolk University’s board of trustees issued a memo last week defending board members’ contribution to the school, commitment to diverse hiring, and implementation of new bylaws, according to The Boston Globe.

Chairman Andrew Meyer’s memo, sent on Friday, is the latest development in a public back and forth between Suffolk University’s board of trustees and university president Margaret McKenna.

“Many of us have personally contributed tens of thousands, and some hundreds of thousands, of dollars to the university,’’ Meyer’s memo said, according to the Globe.

In early February, the Globe reported that students, alumni, and more than two dozen civic and business leaders came to McKenna’s defense in January after news leaked that the board was trying to replace her. Meyer is seen as having spearheaded the board’s attempt to replace McKenna, according to the Globe.

After negotiations between the board and president, it was agreed that McKenna would remain president for another 18 months and Meyer would be replaced as board chairman in May.
