Millis elementary school shuts down due to ‘concern’ over air quality tests
There will be no classes at the Clyde Brown Elementary school on Monday and Tuesday.
An elementary school in Millis has been closed for two days after air quality tests showed “concerns’’ in two parts of the building.
Classes were canceled Monday and Tuesday at Clyde Brown Elementary School in Millis, according to a statement from Superintendent Nancy Gustafson. The air was tested at the school on Thursday and Friday.
“Unfortunately, the results from one lab indicated there is no level of concern but the other lab results for the same location did indicate a concern,’’ wrote Gustafson.
In a message posted on the school’s website Sunday night, Gustafson told parents: “We regret the lateness of this message.’’ She said the decision to cancel school came after a Sunday evening conference call with the Department of Environmental Protection and the Department of Public Health.
“I realize that this is a great inconvenience for families but we must ensure that the air quality is indeed safe,’’ Gustafson wrote.
A hired consultant and state officials will be at the school Monday and Tuesday for further testing and to help the school develop a remediation plan if results continue to be troubling, Gustafson said.
The district is hoping to have conclusive test results and an air remediation system in place by Wednesday. The school’s extended day program is also closed due to lack of staffing, though there are no concerns about air quality in that building.
