Suspect arrested in Lowell police assault

Lowell police have arrested a suspect who allegedly assaulted three officers as they tried to stop him from robbing another man. The department said they located the suspect on Saturday morning based on a tip from the public.

Gerald Paul Rodriguez, 20, was arrested for unarmed robbery, assault and battery on a police officer, and other charges. Rodriguez allegedly injured two officers who tried to detain him for attempting to rob another man around 11 a.m. Friday morning near Merrimack Street. When a third officer chased after him, Rodriguez allegedly attacked and injured him as well.

One of the officers involved was transported to the hospital with a laceration above one eye.

Authorities first tweeted a statement seeking public assistance in finding Rodriguez on Saturday afternoon. Rodriguez was in custody just hours later.
