Police: Handgun shown during assault on student in UMass Amherst dorm

UMass Amherst adjunct faculty members are paid 18 to 34 percent more than their counterparts at UMass Lowell. File

UMass Amherst issued a campus-wide shelter in place order Thursday evening after a report of a “hostile armed person’’ in Pierpont Hall, a first-year dormitory.

After the order was lifted at about 7:15 p.m., the university said police are investigating an assault on a student in the dorm, in which a handgun was shown but not fired. The incident involved two suspects, who are not believed to be students and who fled campus, the university said.

The male victim suffered a laceration to his head and was taken to Cooley Dickinson Hospital in Northampton for treatment, according to the school.

UMass police said they do not believe the assault was a random act, and the school said police are “vigorously pursuing leads.’’
