Flooding, ocean swells batter South Shore, Cape Cod, and the islands
High gusts of wind, powerful waves, and blowing snow battered the South Shore, Cape Cod, and the islands of Massachusetts on Monday, causing widespread flooding of streets and houses.
The National Weather Service issued a blizzard warning for the South Shore, Cape Cod, and the islands. About 12 to 18 inches of snow are expected for Plymouth County and Cape Cod, and gusts of winds were estimated to be between 45 and 65 mph, the National Weather Service said.
Blizzards are defined as a snowstorm with sustained winds or frequent gusts above 35 mph and reduced visibility for a prolonged period of time. Unofficially, that criteria was met on Monday in Nantucket, Martha’s Vineyard, Hyannis, Plymouth, and Chatham, the National Weather Service said.
