Deadly North Andover fire caused by smoking
Fire officials said Monday the North Andover fire that left one woman dead Saturday was caused by “the improper use or disposal of smoking materials.’’
The fire began in a second-floor apartment on Park Street, according to a release from Acting State Fire Marshal Peter Ostroskey and North Andover Fire Chief Andrew Melnikas. Officials said the fire originated on the living room couch and the victim’s clothing.
“Sadly, there were no working smoke alarms in the apartment,’’ Ostroskey said. “Time is your enemy in a fire and working smoke alarms give you the earliest warning of danger and the most possible time to use your escape plan.’’
Police have not yet identified the woman.
