Credit card skimmer found on a self-serve gas pump

Hingham Police Department

A credit card skimmer was found earlier this week at a self-service gas pump in Hingham, police said.

A technician called by the Gulf station on Route 3A to repair the credit card machine on the pump discovered the device. Hingham police said no other skimmers were found at any of the other pumps.

The device had been installed under the credit card cover and was plugged in to record and store data. The skimmer could be removed later by the thieves or transmit the data wirelessly, police said.

The device was installed on a pump that was closer to the street and further away from the station attendants. Police believe the device was installed around January 22, when the credit card machine began having intermittent problems.

The department said it has notified all other Hingham gas stations of the incident and asked them to check their pumps.

The incident is under investigation, police said.
