Boston Latin students speak out on racism concerns at school meeting
Schools Superintendent Tommy Chang praised and vowed to act on behalf of the Boston Latin School students who said on Wednesday night the prestigious school had ignored instances of racism, The Boston Globe reports.
Two Latin School seniors, Meggie Noel and Kylie Webster-Cazeau, began the #BlackatBLS social media campaign to raise awareness of what they said was the Latin School’s failure to address racism.
At a School Committee meeting on Wednesday, Noel said that she and other classmates had been the target of racist tweets from other students. When those were shown to administrators, nothing was done about it.
“The fact that our administration failed to publicly denounce this behavior or even say something to the students making the comments has created an unsafe and racially hostile learning environment for students of color at BLS,’’ Noel said, according to the Boston Herald.
Chang, who met with the students on Monday, praised their courage at the meeting, according to the Globe.
“This struggle is not new to Boston,’’ Chang said. “We are ready to listen and act on [the student advocates’] behalf.’’
The meeting came not long after Mayor Marty Walsh met with the “brilliant, remarkable’’ student activists on Wednesday, he said in a tweet.
