The Boston Public Library called overnight graffiti incident a ‘senseless act’

Police are looking for the suspect who tagged the historic building with graffiti.

Crews worked through the morning to power wash the Boston Public Library’s historic McKim building after it was tagged with graffiti Tuesday night.

A witness reported the incident to the Boston Police Department at 11:50 p.m.

“There were fresh white paint tags on the Dartmouth Street side of the library,’’ Myeshia Henderson, spokesperson for the Boston Police Department, told Boston.com.

The library called it a “senseless act’’ in a Twitter post thanking everyone for their support Wednesday morning.

“It’s disappointing that the Central Library in Copley Square, a public building and a significant architectural, cultural, and historical icon in the City of Boston, would be vandalized in this way,’’ Melina Schuler, spokesperson for the Boston Public Library, told Boston.com in an email. “We’re grateful that the graffiti was able to be removed, and for the generous outpouring of support from our patrons and the greater Boston community.’’
