Man rescued after he fell through ice in a swamp

The 72 year-old man called 911 from the broken ice.

A 72-year-old man called 911 from the broken ice of a Franklin swamp Monday night.

“He had fallen through the ice and was ankle deep in water, unable to move,’’ said the Franklin police and fire departments in a statement.

First responders were called to the scene at about 9 p.m. The Massachusetts State Police Air Wing assisted with the nighttime rescue, providing light to the area. The man was about 100 yards from the road, in a swamp off Beaver Street.

Firefighters, wearing wetsuits, used ice sleds to reach the man. After he was pulled from the ice, he was treated by EMTs and then taken to Milford Regional Medical Center. According to the statement, he was in “stable condition’’ when taken to the hospital.

“Thankfully this man was able to call 911 as soon as he got stuck and was not seriously injured,’’ Franklin Police Chief Stephan Semerjian said.

“Given the variations in temperature we’ve seen over the past several weeks, ice in town has not had the chance to freeze sufficiently to safely support the weight of people,’’ Franklin Fire Chief Gary B. McCarraher said. “We strongly advise residents stay off the ice at this time, until a long period of subfreezing temperatures occur.’’

Officials said the MBTA commuter rail was stopped for a brief period of time during the incident.
