Boston Herald endorses Chris Christie in ‘increasingly bizarre’ GOP primary
Just after The Boston Globe made its picks for the presidential primaries, the Boston Herald rolled out an endorsement of New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie.
Explaining that the Republican presidential campaign has become “an increasingly bizarre sideshow’’ in recent months, the Herald threw its support behind Christie.
“Starting now this race gets serious, and Christie is a serious candidate,’’ the Herald wrote.
The Herald isn’t the first major paper to in New England to give Christie some love — New Hampshire’s Union Leader also endorsed the candidate for the Republican nomination last fall. Earlier this week, the Globe endorsed Hillary Clinton and John Kasich in the Democratic and Republican primaries, respectively.
In touting Christie, the Herald cited his ability to reach across party lines in largely Democratic New Jersey, his experience as a U.S. attorney during the war on terror, his work on education and criminal justice reform, and — probably what he’s known best for nationally — his “guts’’ and “feisty’’ attitude.
“And there is just something about that Jersey guy attitude — feisty but not mean-spirited, tough but not hateful — that has a shot at taking an angry electorate and helping it find a focus and a purpose,’’ the endorsement read. “Gov. Chris Christie is a smart and principled candidate with a real shot at uniting his party and broadening its appeal in November.’’
