Whitman man accused of shooting at snowplow driver says he feared for his life

A Whitman man accused of shooting at a snowplow driver in Plymouth Saturday night pleaded not guilty to the charges against him Monday, according to the Plymouth District Attorney’s office.

Bruce O’Brien, 60, was charged with discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a building, carrying a firearm under the influence of liquor or drugs, disorderly conduct, and assault with a dangerous weapon, authorities said.

Around 7 p.m. Saturday, Plymouth police received a report that a gun was fired from a vehicle. When police pulled over O’Brien’s Jeep Cherokee, they found three shell casings in the front compartment as well as two loaded pistol magazines in the front console, according to the DA’s office.

O’Brien allegedly told police that he when he tried to pass the snowplow, the driver veered toward the passenger side of his Jeep, nearly hitting the vehicle. At the time, someone was sitting in the passenger seat and O’Brien, saying that he feared for his life, shot at the plow driver three times, authorities said.

After posting $2,500 in cash bail, O’Brien was ordered to surrender his firearms to Whitman police and refrain from contact with the plow driver. He is expected back in court on February 23.
