Billerica high schoolers are giving up their cellphones to fundraise for a cancer patient

This is the third annual “Billerica Cells Out for a Cause.’’

Billerica students participate in the “Billerica Cells Out for a Cause’’ campaign.

You may think High School students would never give up their cellphones, but Billerica teens are relinquishing their tech devices for 21 days, for a good cause.

Thursday marked the start of the Billerica Memorial High School’s third annual “Billerica Cells Out for a Cause’’ campaign, WCVB reports. The 21 phone-free days help support cancer patients and research on the disease.

Without their phones, students will be going out to raise money for Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and a local cancer patient, whose thank-you letter was read to the students Thursday, according to WCVB.

Over the past two years, Billerica students have raised $75,000 through the campaign, which started in 2014 when then-7th grade Billerica PeeWee Hockey player Ian Cadden was fighting leukemia.

When the Billerica Memorial High School boys varsity hockey team learned of Cadden’s condition, they made him their honorary captain and started soliciting pledges for a fundraiser, WBZ reported. It was one of their parents who suggested the cell phone contingent.

Cadden is now cancer free, and is giving up his cell phone to participate in this year’s fundraiser.
