A Catholic group wants to cancel a Watertown play about the Virgin Mary
A Catholic group wants to cancel a play about the Virgin Mary taking place this month at Watertown’s New Repertory Theatre, reports The Boston Globe.
The Pennsylvania-based organization America Needs Fatima is calling the play blasphemous and launched an online petition against the production, according to the Globe. The group says, “Every Catholic and God-fearing American is disturbed by such blatant insensitivity to God and His Holy Mother.’’
Colm Toibin, the author of the play, told the Globe, “I believe in freedom of speech, but that includes my freedom to imagine and write, and the freedom of a theatre to put on a play which I wrote in all seriousness.’’
Jim Petosa, artistic director at New Repertory Theatre, told the Globe Thursday that the production will go on as scheduled.
