Maine Police tell of encounter with rogue opossum in harrowing, fantastic Facebook post

“Not your regular docile, fainting at the first sight of fear opossum, but a nasty, fire breathing type opossum.’’

A Maine State Trooper had a daring interaction with a malicious marsupial Tuesday, as a novel-esque Facebook post by the Maine State Police Headquarters details.

The official page of the Maine State Police detailed a harrowing run-in with an opossum, in which the “ferocious’’ beast was quelled by a helpful crimefighter.

Trooper Eric Paquette aided a distressed citizen named James Freely; Freely was “given a start by a stowaway underneath his seat’’ while driving through Greene, Maine.

The stowaway? An opossum. A “nasty, fire breathing type opossum,’’ according to the text.

The creature was underneath Freely’s driver’s seat, and with a riot baton in hand— don’t worry, the poster assures no animals were harmed during this “investigation’’ — Trooper Paquette “returned to Mr. Feely’s vehicle and gently encouraged…the rather ferocious looking critter from the passenger compartment of the vehicle and back into the wild from whence it came.’’

The story came to the department’s attention after Feely wanted to thank Paquette for his job well done, but did not catch his name.

The Maine State Police — who apparently employ a comic book writer as their social media manager — used the post to remind everyone of an important fact:

“The weed of crime bears bitter fruit. Crime does not pay… The Trooper knows!’’

Indeed. Read the full Facebook post below. (It’s worth it).
