A Scituate man died in a 2-alarm fire at his home

The home was so cluttered that firefighters could not get inside.

A 42-year-old Scituate man died in a 2-alarm fire at his home Tuesday night.

Entry into the home was blocked by clutter, forcing firefighters to fight the blaze exclusively from the outside, said Scituate Fire Capt. Mark Donovan.

“We were unable to get inside,’’ said Donovan.

Firefighters saw Sean Gorman lying in his bed in a rear bedroom of the home and went through a window to try to rescue him, according to Plymouth County District Attorney Timothy J. Cruz’s office. First responders tried to revive Gorman before he was taken to South Shore Hospital. He was pronounced dead soon after.

Town officials were aware of the cluttered property, said Donovan.

“The town of Scituate has a hoarding task force and [the house] was on the list of properties that they were working with,’’ said Donovan.

The blaze happened just before 8 p.m. Gordon lived with his mother, who was not home at the time of the fire.

Officials say the cause of the fire is under investigation and no foul play is suspected.
