Woman who reported attack, robbery in Chelsea fabricated incident, police say

A woman who told police that three men attacked and robbed her in Chelsea Saturday is now facing criminal charges for fabricating the account, according to police.

Denissa Perez, 25, of Chelsea, will be charged with misleading a police officer in a criminal investigation, police said.

Perez told police that she was attacked by three men around 9:30 p.m. near the Lynn Street Extension between Central Avenue and Maverick Street. She reported that the men punched, kicked, and slashed her with a knife, severely injuring her and leading her to seek medical treatment at Whidden Hospital in Everett, police said.

As police investigated the incident, they uncovered inconsistencies in her story that led them to believe it had been fabricated.

“As Detectives began the process of conducting a comprehensive follow up investigation of the victim’s version of the incident in question police uncovered several inconsistencies in terms of the physical and digital evidence that they had available,’’ police said in a statement Monday. “This trend continued throughout the investigation yesterday and all day today.’’

Instead, police said they determined that a fight broke out Saturday between three men while Perez was present. While attempting to break up the fight, Perez’s hand was cut by a broken bottle, leading her to go to the hospital for stitches, according to police. She also received bruises and scrapes as a result of the struggle, police said.

Perez will be arraigned in Chelsea District Court later this month and could face additional charges following further investigation, according to police.

There was no information immediately available about an attorney for Perez.
