Boston Marathon bombing survivor Rebekah Gregory is married
“Now here I am starting 2016, married (SURPRISE!!!) to my college love.’’
“Life is messy, but if you’re lucky…sometimes it gives you another chance to get it right,’’ begins a Facebook post in which Boston Marathon bombing survivor Rebekah Gregory announced her marriage to her college sweetheart.
Gregory’s life has not been picture perfect lately, but she’s persevered. In 2013, Gregory was near the Boston Marathon finish line when a bomb went off less than 10 feet away from her. Her left leg was amputated in 2014 after multiple surgeries. Later that year, she ended her marriage with Pete DiMartino, who was also injured in the bombing.
“[I]f I have learned anything over the last couple of years it is that life is too short to be anything but happy,’’ she wrote on Facebook. “I have also FINALLY accepted that I am human and sometimes it takes a LONG time and a lot of mistakes to get to your true happiness.’’
Gregory wrote that she met her husband when she was 18 years old in college and “fell head over heels for [him] right away.’’ Family difficulties forced her to transfer back home, and that was the last she saw him–until this past August. She wrote that the moment she saw him she felt 18 again, and that “nothing else mattered.’’
Gregory wrote that all of her experiences have helped her to appreciate life, and now when she “wasn’t looking at all, the best person showed up to appreciate it with [her].’’
Congratulations, Rebekah.
