Bates College student from Mass. dies after being found unresponsive in his dorm room
A Bates College student originally from Massachusetts died after he was found unresponsive in his dorm room.
James Jhun, a senior at the liberal arts college in Lewiston, Maine, was found Sunday morning and transported to St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead, Bates College spokesman Kent Fischer told Boston.com in an email statement.
“This is a terrible loss for his family and the entire Bates community and we are working hard to provide support to his family and friends at this difficult time,’’ Fischer said. “We are profoundly sad and share the tremendous grief of his family.’’
Lewiston police told the Lewiston-Auburn Sun Journal officials are working to determine the cause of Jhun’s death.
“We understand he has a history of prior medical conditions,’’ Lt. Mark Cornelio told the newspaper. “The Medical Examiner will be conducting an autopsy sometime this week.’’
Jhun, who was expected to graduate in May, hailed from Lincoln and was a member of Lincoln-Sudbury Regional High School’s 2012 class, according to his LinkedIn profile. A dual citizen of the U.S. and South Korea, Jhun was pursuing a degree in environmental health studies while minoring in music. He was also the founder and president of Bates Buddies, an outreach program through the university that mentors students in local elementary schools.
