MBTA to refund thousands after app overcharges commuter rail riders for parking

The Commuter Rail lost $5.75 per ride in 2015, according to the MBTA. The Boston Globe

The MBTA is issuing a refund to thousands of passengers who were wrongly charged for two days of parking instead of one when the PayByPhone app experienced a glitch Thursday morning, according to the agency.

The payment app, which allows commuter rail riders to pay parking fees from their phone rather than using the honor box system, wasn’t working around 7 a.m. due to a technical issue, the MBTA said. The glitch was caused by a Wednesday night software update to the app and led more than 8,100 riders to be charged double the daily parking fee, The Boston Globe reported. The agency said refunds will appear on customers’ credit card statements “soon.’’

“The MBTA apologizes for the confusion this mistake created earlier today,’’ MBTA spokesman Joe Pesaturo said in an email to the Globe.
