At a rally Thursday at Dartmouth College, Bernie Sanders announced the endorsement of a one-time Massachusetts senator and influential Democratic Party leader…

Paul Kirk.

The 77-year-old Newton native is mostly known as a former aide to Sen. Ted Kennedy and for serving as Democratic National Committee chairman from 1985-1989. In 2009, following Kennedy’s death, Kirk was appointed to the Senate to fill the vacant seat. He served as interim senator until Republican Scott Brown was sworn in five months later on February 4, 2010 following a special election.

Kirk is also one of the more than 700 Democratic superdelegates, who are free to vote for whoever they want during the nominating process at the party convention. In the 2008 primary, he endorsed Barack Obama.

Speaking at the Hanover, New Hampshire rally, Kirk praised Sanders for his position against the influence of money in politics and his campaign’s success fundraising off small donations.

“The American people are sick of the old way,’’ Kirk said, per The Boston Globe. “They also believe — as Bernie and I do — enough is enough.’’
