A Charlton man named Jihad was sent to prison for arson, tried to blame his name

After telling officials three years ago he set his apartment on fire in a suicide attempt over his first name, a Charleton man admitted the real reason he set the blaze before pleading guilty to arson.

Jihad Georges pleaded guilty to arson of a dwelling and attempting to commit a crime on Dec. 21 in Worcester Superior Court and was sentenced to two years in state prison, according to Worcester District Attorney Joseph D. Early Jr. Once released, he’ll face two years of probation.

Georges, 45, told officials in 2013 that he set fire to his living room because his first name kept him from getting a job, reports The Telegram & Gazette.

The word jihad means “a holy war waged on behalf of Islam as a religious duty,’’ according to the Merriam-Webster dictionary.

Then Georges admitted last month he set the three-alarm blaze to collect $20,000 in renter’s insurance, according to the Telegram.
