Boston city councilor wants to exempt people over 60 from shoveling snow

If you’re over 60 and live in Boston, you might be off the hook for shoveling snow.
Boston City Councilor Tito Jackson will propose an ordinance Wednesday that exempts elderly residents as well as those with disabilities from clearing the sidewalk around their home after a storm, The Boston Globe reported. Current city rules require all homeowners to shovel their sidewalks within three hours of snow hitting the ground or face the possibility of a $50 fine.
“We have many elders who still own their homes and we want to make sure we are able to keep them in our homes in our communities,’’ Jackson told the Globe.
Jackson is also proposing that the city hire young people to get the job done, emphasizing that the positions could lessen the demand for youth jobs.
