Prosecutor: Worcester toddler nearly died after alleged beating by mother’s boyfriend
The man who allegedly beat his girlfriend’s three-year-old on New Year’s Day was deemed too dangerous to be released during a hearing on Friday, according to the Worcester Telegram and Gazette.
The boy was brought to UMass Memorial Medical Center on January 1 after vomiting, running a fever and suffering abdominal pain, the Telegram reported. The boy underwent surgery for a perforated bowel.
Doctors estimated the 3-year-old boy was about “three hours from death’’ when his mother brought him to hospital and won’t be able to eat anything by mouth for six weeks, prosecutor Kristin Salvatore said in Central District Court.
After an investigation, Johnny Sanchez, 23, of Worcester, the mother’s live-in boyfriend, was charged with assault and battery on a child causing serious injury, and assault and battery on a household member.
Sanchez is also facing charges from a November arrest after allegedly threatening to kill his girlfriend with a knife and ripping the mirror off her car, the Telegram reported.
