Michael Mullane, Boston firefighter and union leader, has died at 68
Michael Mullane, a Boston firefighter and union leader, died of complications from surgery on Friday, according to his obituary. He was 68.
Mullane, known as the “ferocious protector of firefighters and their families,’’ was dedicated to a life of service as a Navy veteran, according to The Boston Globe. He was a 43-year firefighter assigned to Engine 21.
He was the former union president of the Boston Firefighters Local 718, senior member of the International Association of Firefighters Executive Board for 32 years, and the founding member of the Massachusetts Fallen Firefighters Memorial Committee. Mullane was a former member of the board of directors of the Boston Public Health Commission, his obituary stated.
“Mike’s death will not only leave a hole in our family but also in his firefighter families,’’ the obituary read. “He was the type of guy who would give you the shirt off his back.’’
“He was one of the greatest champions of our members and workers everywhere that this union and our labor movement will ever know,’’ Harold A. Schaitberger, president of the International Association of Fire Fighters, said in a statement to the Globe.
Mayor Marty Walsh said in a Facebook post that “firefighters have lost one of their best advocates, nationwide, of all time.’’
