Macy’s announced Wednesday it will close 40 of its 770 stores nationwide, two of which are in Massachusetts, according to a statement from the company.

“In light of our disappointing 2015 sales and earnings performance, we are making adjustments to become more efficient and productive in our operations,’’ wrote Macy’s in the statement.

The department store chain will close its locations in Springfield’s Eastfield Mall and in Lanesborough’s Berkshire Mall. The Lanesborough and Springfield stores both opened in 1994 and have 129 employees combined.

The nationwide closures and job cuts will save the company $400 million a year, said the statement.

Other New England stores closing as part of the restructuring include an Enfield, Conn. and Bedford, N.H. store.
