According to police, the suspect walked up to an officer sitting in a marked cruiser near the City Hall Dock Square parking garage, said “You heard about the war, right?’’ and then starting punching the officer through the open window. The officer punched back while radioing for assistance, according to police. The suspect then ran into the garage as more police officers arrived at the scene.

Police said he was scaling a fence trying to escape when the responding officers found him and subdued him as he yelled, “You are all doomed, and you’re going to die. They told me to do this.’’

Andrew Bowman, 23, of Everett, was arrested and charged with assault and battery on a police officer causing injury, trespassing, resisting arrest, and being a disorderly person.

It was not immediately clear when Bowman would be arraigned or whether he is represented by an attorney.

No information was immediately available about Bowman’s arraignment or attorney.

“This officer displayed incredible restraint, defending himself without the use of a baton, pepper spray, or deadly force, even though the situation may have warranted it,’’ said Boston Police Commissioner Bill Evans in a statement. “I speak on behalf of my entire department when I say that we are all thankful that this officer is going to be okay.’’
