Drone spotted near Logan Airport on New Year’s Day

It is illegal to fly drones within a five miles of an airport.

The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating the sighting of a done near Logan Airport on New Year’s Day. It was the second time in a week that a drone was spotted near the airport.

Crew aboard a JetBlue flight reported seeing the unmanned aircraft around 12:15 p.m. as the plane approached Runway 22 Left for landing, the FAA said in a statement. The crew told officials the drone was about 800 feet in the air, one mile northeast of the airport.

State police were notified, the FAA said.

It is illegal to fly drones above 400 feet and within a 5-mile radius around an airport without first contacting the airport or control tower. A report released in December found there’s been a growing number of close calls between drones and manned aircraft. Beginning this year, drone owners must register the devices with the FAA.
