Suspect wanted in 2014 Lawrence murder captured in New Hampshire

A man secretly indicted Wednesday on a murder charge was arrested in a New Hampshire hotel the same day, investigators said.

Joshua Chevez

Joshua Chevez, 23, was seen leaving a room at the Red Roof Inn in Salem, New Hampshire shortly after 10 p.m. Wednesday night. Earlier that day, an Essex County grand jury had secretly indicted Chevez in connection with the shooting death of a man in Lawrence in August 2014, Essex County District Attorney’s office spokesman Steve O’Connell said.

Mark Trussell was shot in the back of the head around 3 a.m. in the Stadium Projects in Lawrence on Aug. 17, 2014, according to the Lawrence Eagle-Tribune. The newspaper reported that he was not the intended target, but was caught in the crossfire.

Trussell, 35, died days later in a Boston hospital. He was a cook and the father of four children.

O’Connell declined to comment on the specifics of Trussell’s killing, or how Chevez was identified as a suspect.

Two other defendants are also charged in Trussell’s killing. Jeremiah Torres, 23, and Juan Castillo, 19, were indicted in December 2014 and later arrested, O’Connell said. Both are charged with murder and are set for trial on May 16.

Chevez was taken into custody without incident, Salem police said. The officers said they found crack cocaine, oxycodone pills and a loaded .38-caliber revolver inside the room.

Chevez was arraigned Thursday in Salem on one count of being a fugitive from justice, three counts of possession of a controlled drug and one count of being a felon in possession of a dangerous weapon.

He is expected to be indicted in an Essex County court at a later date.
